* El Chavo del Ocho (Chaves in Brazil and O Xavier in Portugal), or simply El Chavo, is a Mexican television series created, scripted, directed and starring Roberto Gómez Bolaños (known as Chespirito). The main cast is composed by Roberto Gómez Bolaños(Chaves), Carlos Villagrán(Quico), Ramón Valdés(Seu Madruga), Florinda Meza(Dona Florinda), María Antonieta de las Nieves(Chiquinha), Edgar Vivar(Lord Barriga), Rubén Aguirre(Professor Girafales), Angelines Fernández(Witch of the 71), Horacio Gómez(Godinez) and Raúl Padilla(Jaiminho). The series first aired in 1971. The barrel is a secret hideout, Chaves never slept there. They say Chaves shared an apartment with an old lady. Neither she nor the apartment ever appeared on the show. *

* Its first exhibition was on June 20, 1971, as a skit on the Chespirito program. The program was initially broadcast on Canal 8, but in 1975 it was switched to Televisa. The original name of the program is “El Chavo del Ocho”, which translates as “The Boy of Eight”. In Brazil, Chavo ended up becoming Chaves. The creator of the series, Roberto Gomes Bolaños, is nicknamed Chespirito, which means “little Shakespeare”. * Chiquinha and Dona Neves do not appear in the cartoon, due to the problems that actress Maria Antonieta de las Nieves has with Roberto Bolaños. The theme song by Dona Florinda and Professor Girafales comes from the movie “…..Gone with the Wind”, and is called “Tara´s Theme”. The name of Dona Neves, Chiquinha's grandmother, was taken from the surname of the interpreter of the two, Maria Antonieta de las Nieves. The full name of Dona Neves, in the original is Nieves Frías de Lemón Aguado. *

* His Belly's full name is Zenón Barriga y Pesado. Nhonho's full name is Febronio Barriga Gordorritúa. In the original, Chiquinha is called Chilindrinha. Of the main cast, Florinda Meza, Edgar Vivár and Maria Antonieta, and Carlos Villagrán (who played his father only once) play more than one character each. * The character Chaves was voiced by five different people in Brazil: Marcelo Gastaldi, Sérgio Moreno, Cassiano Ricardo, Tatá Guarnieri and Daniel Mullerem. Quico wears sailor clothes in honor of his father, who was a commander in the Navy and was swallowed by a whale. It is speculated that Quico's full name is Federico Mátalas Corcuera, or Federico Bardón de la Regueira. * The character Seu Madroga (or Seu Romão, as it was also translated in another dub), Seu Madruga's cousin, is called Don Roman in the original, a tribute to Don Ramon. Angelines Fernandez, who plays Dona Clotilde, was considered one of the most beautiful women in Mexico in her youth. Angelines was Don Ramon's best friend in the cast. When he passed away, she didn't leave her great friend's coffin for a minute. After that, she went into depression and died in March 1994, coincidentally, at the age of 71. *

In 94, Marie Antoinette starred in the series Aquí está la Chilindrina, which had only 20 episodes, and this led to a legal fight with Bolaños, who had the rights to the character. * Bolaños was practically a boxing amateur, so much so that he even included an episode in the series talking about the sport. Bolaños' first program, was called Los Supergenios de La Mesa Cuadrada, which was composed of sketches, and the still had Don Rámon and Maria Antonieta de las Nieves in its cast. However, due to its great success, the name was changed to Chespirito y la Mesa Cuadrada, and finally to Chespirito. * Godinez was played by Horacio Gomez Bolaños, brother of Roberto Gomes Bolaños. Horacio had a degree in business administration, and always appeared in his brother's productions, however, he didn't like acting, but working with the financial part of his business. But Roberto saw something in his brother that convinced him to play Godinez. After retiring the character, Horacio dedicated himself to producing and directing. The eternal Godinez died of a heart attack, in 99, during the recording of a tribute to the Chespirito series. *

* Edgar Vívar, his Barriga, is trained in medicine. Vívar made a cameo in the film O Orfanto by Guillermo del Toro. According to Vívar, he was never a friend of Villagrán, which made the second very sad, as he considered himself a great friend. * The actor who played Professor Girafales, Rubén Aguirre, is no less than 1.96 meters. As his first job in his acting career, Aguirre worked as a clown, and his stage name was Pipo. Aguirre has a degree in agronomy, however his passion for acting was stronger, leading to work as a radio announcer, ventriloquist, bullfight narrator, among others. * Tangamandápio, hometown of the postman Jaiminho, really exists, and is located in the northwest of the state of Michoácan. The city honored the character with a statue of him in a square. Jaiminho joined the cast of the series in 79, but left in 81, due to the return of Seu Madruga. With the new departure of Don Rámon in 82, he returned to the series, this time living in the village, and the character changes a lot, starting to have personality traits of Seu Madruga. Despite not knowing how to ride a bike, Jaiminho carries it everywhere because he is afraid of losing his job if they find out he doesn't use it. Jaiminho's full name is Jaime Garabito. *
