In the same year, Bahia faced a tragedy. On July 2, for the first time since its foundation in 1931, Esquadrão de Aço lost a classic to Vitória. The player Bitonho, from Bahia, left the field arrested because he attacked the referee. The following day, Bitonho committed suicide. *

With that, Bahia also became the representative of Brazil in the first edition of the Libertadores Cup, in 1960. The team was eliminated in the first phase by San Lorenzo after losing by 3 x 0 in Argentina and winning by 3 x 2 in Salvador. *
