Frescobol began in the 1940s in the sands of Copacabana, being idealized by Lian Pontes de Carvalho. The entrepreneur uses leftover wood from his pool plank and furniture store to manufacture the rackets. The popularization of the sport was thanks to the writer Millôr Fernandes, who described it as "the only sport with a sporting spirit, without formal competition, losers or winners".
